General Demographics
Families
HomeStart works with families at risk of eviction and families staying in shelter. We also work with single participants who reunite with their children.
- In FY'07, 21% of HomeStart participants were part of a family.
- 91% of those families were headed by a single parent.
- 70% of families had a head of household coping with a disability.
- The main sources of income for families were unemployment (44%), SSI/SSDI (35%), and TANF (24%).

Disabilities and Special Needs
Approximately 88% of the 1,425 participants served in FY '07 identified themselves as coping with domestic violence, a psychiatric disability, health problems and/or substance abuse. Such obstacles and challenges make it difficult to obtain permanent affordable housing.

Few participants are coping with only one disability or obstacle. As a result, meeting the special housing needs of these individuals continues to be a central focus of HomeStart's case management, housing search and follow-up stabilization work.
